Mckenzie Tan

Discussion in 'Tanning' started by ozzy49938, Mar 17, 2015.

  1. I have a guy who is debating getting a Elk mounted. He dropped off the cape and said it might be a little while before he will figure out if he will mount it. I don't want the cape to freezer burn so My thought is to pull it out and flesh and salt it up and dry it. Cheap way to keep the hide from going bad if he decides not to mount it. question comes in at can I still use Mckenzie brush on tan to tan the cape if he decides to mount it. If yes what would be the proper way to rehydrate the cape. Can I just drop it in the pickle as normal and follow through as normal or do I need a new plan all together. Thanks for any help you can give me on this.

Yes I would thaw out and flesh and salt and charge him for that. To hydrate basic soak in cold water agitate often, should hydrate with in 24 hrs. drain then into pickle, it does not matter what tanning agent you use.
