People of low character

Is it just me or does there seem to others to be an unusually high number of people in the Taxidermy world that are of "low character" In my 60 years I have dealt with people in many industries and have never heard of or personally experienced so many individuals who don't just do the right thing. You go to the buyers and sellers area of this site and the horror stories just keep coming. I also find that its not just the unknowns but also some of the top people in this industry that have to be chased to get them to "pony up" or make things right. Do you think this goes on in the majority of other industries or is it just the Taxidermy world ?

Unfortunately RJ, it seems that it isn't just our industry, I assure you it is all. It is an epidemic.

Sadly enough, it's everywhere. Seems it's become an "all about me " kind of world. On the bright side though, a lot of the VERY BEST people I know are in the taxidermy industry.

R.J., unfortunately the lowlife knows no boundaries. Some people have honor, some don't.

Can't speak for all industry's, but It's not just in taxidermy. During my yrs in construction, I met some of the best people God has made and some of the lowest lifeforms on the planet.
I've had to physically threaten employers to pay. Hold equipment for ransom. Had employees murder others and be sentenced to life. Had DEA, FBI and State Police drag people off the job in cuffs.

BUT, they were the exception and not the rule. Good is still triumphing over evil.

Though I agree it is everywhere, I have seen it even more in taxidermy since I started 5 years ago. As with any self employed profession a lot of so called "taxidermists" do this for a reason. They can't hold down a regular job so they become a self employed "taxidermists". Those poor habits and dishonesty they had in the working world carry over to their new profession. I have been through multiple scumbag tanners and the entire reason I learned taxidermy myself was because I was tired of getting the runaround, then finally getting a poor product.

Let me tell you, the "all about me" syndrome is very present in today's high school kids. It is truly all about them and the hell with EVERYONE else. I see it every day school is in session. Unfortunately I have to admit my children fall into this category as well. (Ages 25, 24 & 22) That is not how they are raised but they see it everywhere and can't seem to help but follow the lead.

Trust me , I've recently dealt with manufactured home salesmen and their higher ups trying to aquire a new rent home...... they make taxidermists look like the Pope..... ALL OF THEM, from Palm Harbor to Clayton. I'd hire a carnie before a salesman, VP or any officer in that industry.

It's all around, there is no accountability or consequence for lying and cheating. Why not, it starts out right at the top.

It's in ALL service industries, My dad was a self employed furniture upholsterer for 60 yrs and the same stories occurred in his industry all the way back to the 1950's.

I guess I've been lucky. I grew up in Chicago and if you didn't do the right thing or had low character people would call you out on it and it would be put right. Here in Michigan the most drastic thing I've had to do was drywall screw a copy of a bounced check to the nice oak front door of a guys house after I could get no call back. That moved things along nicely. I think the ones that really get to me are the people that you help out because you can and then you end up wishing you hadn't.

RJ you are right we seem to have an escalation of lost values in our society today, it's everywhere you look, 20 years ago it was not the problem it is today, a lot of things to blame from the federal government to the local schools. I'm in Louisiana and my area of the state there still is a lot of us that will hunt you down and force you to do right, but we are a dieing breed, as long as you keep doing what your supposed to do ( like the world show call out of a scum bag you did a couple years ago, THAT WAS PRICELESS ! ) the world has a chance to reset itself !

Oh this was a good topic of discussion. I agree with all of you, and reading it sparked a little fire in me so please bear with me. It does start at the top and the liberalism that we have seen unfold years ago. Can't fly the flag in certain areas, can't say the Pledge of Allegience at school, can't cheer for your daughter at graduation without getting arrested, can't defend yourself without a court date, can't discipline your kids, can't drink a beer while mowing your grass or you get a DUI, can't use too much water, budget cuts mean vets can't go to the WWII memorial...which is free, can't pay our military...during war, can't buy an M-4 rifle, can't buy ammo, can't smoke a burglar, can't keep pedefiles off school grounds, gotta hire a pedefile, can't have your own opinions on sexual preference, cops can't shoot criminals, cops can't search criminals, can't smoke in bars, can't smoke in casinos, kids can stay on parents insurance till they are grandparents, can't turn away EBT cards, gotta let illegals in the US, gotta release murdering illegals from prison to make room for a pot head, gotta trade 5 taliban for a deserter, OK I am done.

Kids have nobody enforcing discipline; they are allowed to do whatever they want and if you rough em up your going to jail. This country is definitely screwed when they take over the workforce...oh wait they don't have to they can live with mommy and daddy their whole pathetic lives. I'm really getting sick of my customers as well. Have one making payments on his deer every couple weeks...like $50. Other day he was pulling a new fishing boat behind a new F-150. It is such crap. The sad thing is that it ruins my morale and my desire to work in my shop. My wife was on my butt about doing the habitat work for some bobcats and things in the shop and I just don't have any interest in it anymore. I said "Why finish it if they aren't going to come in and pay for it and get it out of here." I am about ready to finish up what I have and say screw it and close the doors. That or be very meticulous about who I take work in from. My days of having people drop stuff off without a checkbook or cash are over. They just ruin it for others, and it is usually family or friends. Sorry I got a little off track in my post. Have a good weekend!

Raise your prices and realize that you don't have to mount everything that is killed in your area. Always get a deposit, raise your prices, take in less work ........ AND MAKE MORE MONEY!
