How Do Tanneries Get Their White Finish?

Discussion in 'Tanning' started by Andrew M, Jul 7, 2015.

  1. I've noticed that on soft tans the professional tanneries have a uniform white finish on the skin. How do they achieve this look? Do they use a chemical? Is it a machine? My soft tanned hides are white, but they just don't have that nice finish. How can I get this result? (is it even possible as a home tanner??)

The whiteness can be contributed by the tan you use. Some are bone white, while some Leathers are creamy to yellowish. The nice finish you mention is a combination of the right Tannage (choice of finished color) used, along with buffering (sanding) them prior to the Finish Tumbling and Caging!

I also get white hides with Trubond, I use citric acid
  5. If one of you don't mind, could you post a picture with your finished tan? I get a white finish using Mckenzie tan, but its not as white as say a mink from Mink and Moyle Tanneries. Maybe its the Mckenzie tan?
