how to stiffen pelts?

Discussion in 'Tanning' started by zestways, Dec 3, 2015.

  1. I have virtually no expertise on this subject, but I recently received some soft tanned otter hides and while they are great for what they are, I'd like to stiffen the pelts so that they will hold their shape when handled. Since these were a gift, I don't know how they were tanned. Is there any sort of standard process that I can use to stiffen these considerably, but without losing fur?

I don't know for but did try misting water on it and let set, most leather products stiffen when they get wet and dry out.
Last resort........fabric starch like they use when ironing clothes.
    I hope this helps.

I want to take a soft skin and make it stiff. That's a first. The question is usually the other way around. lol Rehydrating and stretching it out into the position you want nail it down until it is totally dry, for a couple of weeks to a month and that really should take care of it.
