I've got some beaver hides that are giving me nothing but trouble. They were air dried by a trapper and I just found out he had them hanging by a woodstove for some time. They were very hard to rehydrate and have lots of very thin areas that is hard to shave without cutting holes. Would being stored near heat make the grease burn worse ? Can anything be done to get rid of the grease burns?

Yes heat would speed up the fatty acids working on the skin, and no after this reaction it will not be reversible.
