I'm just getting started as a hobby and curious what sort of precautions I need to take with the fish skin. Let's say I skin the fish out get it clean and put it in the Perservative. It says to give it about 12 hours, do I need to immediately remove the skin? Will it ruin it to keep it in longer? A couple days even? Also can you skin the fish preserve it then save the skin for days without going straight to the form? Do you freeze the skin keep it in water? Or is it best to skin it persevere it and mount it all in two days?

  2. I thought you would have got a helpful reply by now . I cant help you with the preservative query as I dont know what your using . You dont have to mount it all in 2 days, once youve skinned the fish and defleshed the skin you can freeze it until you need it. Make sure its well wrapped before freezing and try not to fold it. You might find something relevant on here re preservative if you do a search. Good luck ;)

Sorry I should have been more specific I had no idea there was so many ways to persevere the skin. I just ordered "Bird and Fish Perservative" from Dan Rinheart and thought it would come with some sort of instruction or even some does and don'ts but it literally just showed up in a bag and so I have no clue what's right and wrong. I also ordered fish paste thinking that's what you use to stick the skin to the form but the only paper work that came with it said "do not use with Bird and Fish Perservative" so now I don't even know what that stuff is. It just smells and looks like Elmer's glue.

  5. Summut screwy going on , surprised your not getting advise from the fish heads on this forum, your queries obviously being ignored. I dont use commercial preservatives so cant help ya, plenty of blokes on here do.

It might be the on and off bad service of the website server. It really gets to the point where you don't even bother posting.

This preservative you purchased is likely borax based and some glues will curdle when coming in contact with borax. I have no experience with purchased fish "tan" but what I use has borax in it and I can leave it in there for up to 3 months with 0 issues. You can soak a skin for 24 hours and then freeze until ready to mount., but make sure to keep it wet, wrapped in a wet towel or in water, the fins will dry out quicker after removing from the solution.

And/or the stupid roll-up ads on the bottom of the page on EVERY PAGE that my pop-up blocker can't get!!! Personally, I make a note of the advertiser and vow never to buy their product when they annoy people like that! Yeti Coolers, Chevy Trucks you are BOTH off my list to ever purchase!!! lol.

P.S> Ironically, the site hung on this post and I had to come back in at a later time to see if it posted - lol! I'd say this site for me is up about 80% of the time maybe...

109 posts - frequent and post enough and you'll probably experience it! I find the site mostly hanging when I post, with being down mostly in the morning or intermittently. I've heard others also don't have many issues. While others experience the problems I've mentioned. It might be something on my end that many other people also have. For instance, it could be a mixture of my browser, my OS and/or my AV software causing things. Doesn't matter. It isn't something I can fix on my end - if it is then I would think somebody here would figure out the workaround because people/regulars are leaving mostly because of the issues. Eventually, they'll have beginners answering questions for beginners - lol! (Orange button?) lol!

P.S. This is the only site that ever gives me problems. Comcast VERY reliable around here...

I've left them in the preservative for a couple days with no problem, I use latex caulk as my paste.
