Hi all! I tanned 3 scrap raccoon hides with Lutan F yesterday and I've noticed they have shrunk and are rubbery. I read that this is a condition known as 'acid swell.'

I've never had this problem before and have followed the same general method for tanning, but I suppose I'll be more vigilant of my neutralization step from now on. I'm not too heartbroken about them because, as I said, they are scrap coons destined to be hat material. Is there any possible way to reverse the swelling and have them be salvageable enough to make hats with? They're hanging on my sink draining right now, so if there's a chance I can save them I'll try it tomorrow. Thank you!

First, resoak them in baking soda bath to neutralize that acid, then start over.
