yak

  1. I am having trouble finding someone to dry tan a yak hide for me. Coyle will, but it will take 9mos +. Can anyone recommend somebody else who might be able to get it done quicker?

I'm assuming a "Yak" life sized Skin and Cape is similar to a Bison. If so, the skin is dense and it usually requires 2-3 Shavings to actually get it to a Tannable thickness. It's a very labor intensive skin to work with. Considering it will tie up employees that tackle it - it will probably not be a cheap piece to process - Tannery wise! They have to shave it - then Pickle it thoroughly again to slightly swell it, then inspect it and if it requires it, Shave it again or maybe even 3 times. Considering the size and work involved, I can appreciate them doing it when things slow down - it's going to tie up a man handling it. Those are huge skins! I'm not familiar with Coyle - but unless he has some employees available to handle it - it sounds like it may slow down his normal production.

  3. Sorry that was supposed to say Moyle. Yah I'm familiar with how the tanning and shaving process works, my question was can anyone recommend someone who could possibly get it done quicker than 9 months. Thanks for the reply though. Its actually thinner than a bison, and smaller. about the size of an elk, just a little thicker. This is the second one that I have done for this guy, the person I had do the first one doesn't have the time to do another right now.
