Hanging a Deer Head UP Alters the Cape Size to a Narrower, Longer Neck?

I'm looking to settle a disagreement. Some people believe that hanging a deer by the antlers, head up stretches out the cape necessitating a narrower neck size on the cape. Others do not believe it makes a difference. What do you think based on your experience?

Id have to say that hanging by the antlers has no effect on neck size.

The cape will stretch to accommodate any position of the neck. It will also return to a natural relaxed position when skinned.

  4. If we hung you up by your ankles for a hour or two, then let you back down do you really think you would be taller ? :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\

hummmm, "The stretch diet" I could stand to use loose a pound or two. :-[ And I wont have to stop eating either . I like it it already. ;D

Hanging a cape by the nose when salt drying can make it harder to get the stretch back after tanning, but not green.

I believe it would effect the neck size to some degree if you where to use the muscle or neck meat to size your forms but the skin it's self would not be effected. I was reading in the Revolution catalog that when they measure for size measurements to use for sculpting they are careful to not drag a deer or hang a deer by its antlers before taking the measurements. If that was put in print in their catalog there must be some merit to it. Personally I measure the skin when its back from the tannery.

I take measurements of the green cape going through the process twice to make sure it's right. I hang mine by the head when salt drying and have never had a problem getting them back to size after tanning and I've used several different tanning methods too. Right before I put them on the form I stick a inner tube inside them, blow them up to the max, and then let sit stretching, for a while. I hand stretch the face and other misc. parts too. It's been years since I've had one that didn't fit the first time and needed form alterations.

Does anybody really measure the neck meat to get measurements? A lot of the time there is no neck meat on the specimens that I get in.

This is an "Dumb Taxidermist" tale brought about by one of the following:

    1. Not knowing how to measure.

    2. Not knowing how to neutralize a hide

    3. Sending your skins to a tannery that falls in to #2

    4. Not knowing how to fit and sew

Sure, hanging a big deer by the head can cause some stretching, but it is not permanent.

  10. No, simple as that.

I don't think it would have any negative effect on the finished product. However It would stretch the neck out and make it more narrow. But once it was skinned and tanned it should go back to normal.

I have seen several suicides where people have hanged them selves and it is amazing how much the necks stretches if the person is fully suspended. At times I have seen the neck appear to double in length. I am sure a deer would have a similar effect.

But again I think Jim Tucker is spot on.

I think if you hang it by his dong, it would be longer!
