Fawn Eye Color

Discussion in 'Deer and Gameheads' started by Andrew M, Dec 24, 2016.

  1. I have a very young fawn that I will be mounting soon but I am confused on the eye color for it. After studying reference pictures of fawns I noticed that some have blue eyes, some have brownish gray eyes, and some just have typical brown eyes. From what I've read it depends on the age. This fawn looks to be a couple months old, but is it still young enough for blue eyes?

(As you can see in the picture, the fawn was partially eaten by coyotes. It was in surprisingly good condition and has held up through the tanning process.. should make a neat pedestal mount when done)

Andrew, It looks young enough for the blue eyes to me. I think you should be fine using blue eyes for this mount.

Tohickon makes a very nice blue eye in the size for a fawn.

I second the Tohickon eyes and they will custom tint them as well.

George The older I get, the better I was.

Biologically, fawns eyes start to turn brown at 9-10 days and by two weeks they are brown. Your fawn looks on the cusp of that age bracket and would look correct with either.
  5. Interesting, thanks for the input!
