I am trying to tan a gator hide. I am at the scale removal process and have been soaking this skin for 24 hours in 6 lbs of calcium hydrochloride(hydrated lime) mixed with 20 gal of water. I have been stirring every 30 minutes or hour and ive got most of the scales off but there are about 4 rows between the front legs(bottom side) that dont even show signs of wanting to come off. Is there some trick i need to perform on these stubborn scales or just keep soaking and stirring? I have read that if the hide is left in this mixture for too long that it will destroy the hide and i have a fair bit of money, time, and work in this hide already and dont want to ruin it but on the same token, i have to get these scales off. What should i do?
