Why we all need to dump UPS

Discussion in 'The Taxidermy Industry' started by Cecil, Aug 2, 2017.

  1. Yes speed dee is at least half the cost sometimes cheaper ,as far as ups being too big look at all the trucking companys that have went under,my dad worked for consolidated freight they were the biggest trucking company in the US, poor management and greed took them down.

I wonder if that will be UPS's fate? It's amazing what they pay some CEO's out there that tank a corporation and walk away with a golden parachute.

We had fish farm in Indiana that was the biggest yellow perch farm in the world. At least 20 million dollars invested. And they hired a guy to run it that had never raised fish. ::) They never took in to account that the wild catch has much much less overhead. Needless to say they went under but not before they started raising trout on pumped well water that had to compete against Idaho's free flowing artesian aquifer that size of Lake Erie. Can you spell DUMB?

I would be surprised if they go under. The hub close with me is always packed with people shipping boxes. I suppose the people that only
ship a few times a year doesn't even notice , they just pay it and go on.

I can see where usps could be cheaper because they drive by your house anyhow with regular mail. There might be a week go by before
I see a ups truck come up the road.

The last few orders from them I have used USPS. They warn me that it may take longer to deliver but so far has been about the same. Also roughly half the price. I know what you are saying about the free shipping Cecil. Summit racing supplies my hot rod addiction and everything over $99 is free shipping, even if they have it drop shipped from CA. And their prices are cheaper than AutoZone and Napa who won't have what I need 99 percent of the time anyway.

Just wait and see what Speedee charges once they get a good footing and start getting bigger.

That's Funny because most Taxidermist have no clue how to make money.

    It's NOT UPS!!

It has more to do with your location over what you are shipping.

I just shipped some whitetail shoulder mounts and all of them in the same exact size box. Shipping ranged from $150 to $290 the cheapest one went the farthest. Texas to Florida $150, Texas the Alabama $290, Texas to Mississippi $275, From me to Dallas 150. It has more to do with common location or are you off the beaten path.

Also as a shipper I get discounts based on volume (not as much as the big guys) but I've noticed that it really depends on where Im shipping. Same size package but I get different discounts and the only difference is where I'm shipping to.

Perhaps but don't put me in that category.

O.K. I'm game but I still think the rates are too high and UPS is taking advantage with their oligopoly. They've lost me forever. And your post does not address the ridiculous extra charges with another one to come this winter.

It seems to me when I was a shipping clerk back in my youth when we shipped something we put a "stamp" printed from a machine on the package and it showed what the shipping charges were. Any of you other guys remember that before the days of just the labels? Then you knew how much the supplier paid to ship your package. I guess that went by the side when they started offering volume discounts to big shippers who use them.

I used to think the USPS sucked but I believe they stepped up their game in the last couple years and I will use them when I can. So what if it takes a day or two longer. To save half or more on shipping I can wait 99% of the time.

Cecil, I highly doubt UPS is going anywhere anytime soon. With Amazon just adding what 40,000 new jobs and the direction of the mail order industry growing like weeds, if anything they will be even more profitable in the future. But, I believe that shipping industry growth also means that we might be seeing some new players in the shipping game in the future.

Why not a credit card vs a debit? I've never really understood why people opt to use a debit card over a credit card when the advantages of a credit card are night and day. No access to your bank account being the main benefit. More leverage with CC's if there's an issue. And in fact, if it were a C.C. you would probably be able to negotiate your way out of the extra charges - not so with your bank. And then you also can earn points with a CC. I thought debit cards for credit card usage was pretty much done by kids out of college trying to build credit that cannot get a real credit card - lol! Just giving you grief Cecil - lol! But, yeah I'm not a big fan of debit cards other than accessing my ATM. I'd much rather have my data skimmed from a CC vs. my data skimmed from a debit card with full access to my bank account! Never happened to me, but TWICE for my sister and bro-in-law! And when it happens, you BEST have extra money somewhere to cover your bills until your bank resolves the case (and that could take over a month!). Back to the topic (lol). You already did what I would've done explained on page 2 of this thread. Called McKenzie and complained...

    Marty,

Good points, but I prefer a debit card because I can get carried away with a credit card. LOL Like I said my mortgage is paid off, no car payments etc. etc. Just put on a metal roof and will never have to deal with shingles wearing out or blowing off again.! And it looks gorgeous on my log home! And I plan on at least semi-retiring in a few years. Possibly even moving back to New England where I grew up during part of my childhood. Haven't you heard the new rich is no debt? ;D

As far as Amazon, last I knew due to disastrous service and rates they felt were too high by UPS during one Christmas season, Amazon dropped UPS. Maybe that's changed now, but when I read that in the news I noted the wife rarely got anything from Amazon via UPS. It was either USPS or Fed ex. If I order something on Ebay it seems it's always USPS. That should tell us something.

BTW did have someone hack into my Debit Card once. Got it all back via Visa.

Funny, I don't feel rich! I paid my house off about nineteen years ago. No car payments or debt. (That is except whatever my electric bill is up to the minute in time. That is actually a debt owed so to speak) They say "Never say never" but it will be one cold friggin day in hell before I go into debt for anything. If I can't pay for it when it moves from the pending status to paid on my online credit card bill I don't buy it. I have not deviated from this for at least fifteen years.

Good for you! There are a lot of people out there that look rich but are in debt up to their eyeballs. One common tendency for people is the more they make the more they spend! You would be surprised at the professionals that live from pay check to pay check!

USPS is on the verge of bankruptcy? Naah. They are doing better than ever even with the stipulation of congress that they set aside billions for retirement funds, and that same congress borrows money from them (just like they raid social security and claim it's on the verge of insolvency which is it not).

As far as the "lazy bastard" you have for a mail delivery guy you live in the Chicago area. What do you expect? ;D Corruption capital of the world! ;D I got one of mine fired years ago. A total idiot that thought my 700 foot driveway was a drag strip. He also pissed off a lot of customers by his stupid comments. One day I answered the door after doing an all nighter painting fish and he asked me," been watching the porn all night eh?" ::)

I took me two weeks to get my money from Visa.

I love my debit card. Don't know why I ever used checks! It's easier to reconcile my account too! No waiting forever for checks to clear. I had one fish feed supplier that would take forever to deposit my checks! When ordering checks got expensive that was the final straw.

Cecil, just for the sake of debate:

Yes, the USPS is indeed on the verge of bankruptcy Cecil: http://www.gao.gov/assets/680/674728.pdf It's a dinosaur business model destined to fail. And that retirement fund stipulation probably will be their demise. Gotta pay for it somehow!

2 weeks to wait for YOUR MONEY and the stress and hassle vs. a credit card fraudulent charge? No thank you! And why would you care when people cash your checks?

So you got a mailman fired? Betcha it wasn't in this decade! Try calling the USPS today to complain and tell me how you even actually talk to a real person. I did and it is automated hell! Total waste of time. I predict in 5 years the USPS will be privatized...

Oh Marty come on. ;D You know there are politicians that want to get rid of USPS. Some have come right out and said so.

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dave-johnson/another-attack-on-our-pos_b_8221136.html

We need the post office. It's not obsolete.

How much you want to bet if you follow the money you will find the politicians that are giving the post office the hardest time are lobbied by UPS and FedEx? Presently the two are barred by law from mailing letters.

As I indicated before Spee-Dee was blocked from setting up shop in my state by legislators.

O.K. time to get back to work. The two musky and three pike should be thawed out by now.

Well, I actually read the 2+ year old link you posted Cecil. Even though the source is a joke! I suspect you did not read the pdf/link I provided. You couldn't have read all of it because it would have opened your eyes to all the things I stated about the Post Office! How in the hell can you justify the cost of all these little towns having a Post Office and full-time employees? Oftentimes with a Post Office already in the adjacent town. Didn't you say the nearest UPS drop-off is 50 miles from you? I'll betcha your Post Office is much closer. And probably three more still closer than that UPS hub! What does that tell you? Massive waste with the USPS!!! Who do you think pays for that convenience Cecil? As much as I hate UPS, their service is still far superior to the USPS.

I recently shipped the potential California State Record Spotted Bay Bass replica and custom habitat to a client in Sacramento via USPS. Saved my client a couple hundred bucks by not using UPS or FedEx. My client took off (what turned out to be) two+ work days as it showed it being delivered. Never happened. And he had to take off part of a third day to drive to the P.O. and pick it up. He couldn't get any straight answers from the folks at his local P.O. on where the package was nor when it would be delivered. Really similar to my experience actually. Horrible service, but cheap! Now, this package was barely within the P.O. size restrictions and I suspect another lazy delivery-person simply left it on the back of the truck each day because he didn't want to lug it to the doorstep. My client was fuming! He told me he will GLADLY pay the extra $200 bucks to ship UPS or FedEx next time. Normally, I have had very few problems with the USPS. But, their big problem is packages sorta go M.I.A. on occasion. This one took just shy of 14 days from the shipping date to finally make it into my customers hands. The second longest delivery time in 20+ years of business also belongs to the USPS. Shipped a fish 45 miles away to Chicago and it took 7 days to arrive!!! Their tracking sucks and is unreliable.

After this last issue with that shipment to California I may go to UPS and bite the bullet with the bigger stuff. My client is paying a couple of grand for a mount he doesn't care about an extra $200 bucks IF UPS iis going to save him time and money in the long run. He lost a couple days pay due to a promised, yet undelivered package. Luckily, he is a great client and didn't blame me!

Wow - 5 Esox in one day??? I couldn't skin 5 in a week with my bad back!
