First fawn mount, question

    Getting ready to mount my first fawn, he was around 2 days old so I ordered the smallest form Mckenzie makes and it was exact measurments as he was, so my question is would you guys pull the cartlidge from the ears or just use bondo. I always pull the cartlidge on all my deer but this little guy is like handling wet toliet paper and I thought the ears might rip or tear real easy, any suggestions would help, the ears are what is gonna make or break this mount and I don"t want to screw it up. Thanks. I ordered ear liners and they are way to big.

    I use bondo in all of my fawn mounts. Earliners for a "fawn" are for a much older animal than what you would expect. I just mounted one yesterday and removed the cartilage. Not that I had to, but I did. It may feel like tissue paper but it is fairly resilient. Good luck.

    Thanks, yeah I guess I will go with bondo since I can't find any earliners small enough, and I don't trust myself to make any that would look right, I just don't want to make them to thick, I tend to do that with bondo, thanks for the reply.

    On fawns that young, I open the and paint a thin layer of epoxy, sprinkle a few strands of fiberglass chop on them, and card the ear. Bondo, unless super thinned tends to make the ears look fat and when you thin it enough to look right, it isn't very strong.

    I've used an ice cream bucket lid and cut to fit and then use epoxy for glue. Works good and is very thin and transparent, just like a fawns's ear should be.

    George, would that be just a 5 min epoxy you are talking about?

    where i've always been
    i have also used earliners on a still born fawn with good results. however, George's epoxy would work great

    I would use Ear Magic but I think that's about the same as the epoxy George is recommending.

    Katie, I use Ear Magic a great deal, but in my opinion, it's a bit too much for those fragile "newborn" fawn ears. The paste tends to be a bit thick and when you try squeezing it into the ear edges, there's a risk of blowing out the ear. That's the only reason I use the Liquid Fast Set over Ear Magic on fawns.

    Now I know some wise guy is going to tell me to microwave the Ear Magic. It certainly does become more liquefied, but heating epoxy is a double edged sword. You'll reduce your cure time from 5-7 minutes to about 30 seconds in some cases. That's NOT what you want on a fawn ear.
