id take the bear in for repair and then not let him take it until the entire balance was paid.

 

since you have a receipt / contract, demand payment in full when he returns after the repair is made. keep the rug out of sight, if possible. if he grabs it and walks out then call the cops and have him charged with theft.

Just explain you can’t keep doing business like that. You have bills that have to be paid. If you’re not willing to do that then charge more just for him. We’ve all done it at some point and we know we always loose.
I learned a lesson here by sending out a gifted duck before I got paid from someone begging for a bird. Never got paid.

That ain't going to work, he's going to want to see the rug before making final payment. BUT, I'd handle it similarly (except for the fact I too would have never let him out the door w/o final payment!) First off, I wouldn't look at this as a negative. Look at it positively as now you have the opportunity to get paid in full! Simply put, when it's done give him a call to let him know and also let him know his final balance due. You'll find out his stance right there on the phone. Personally, I'm not sure WHY he would think he shouldn't have to pay his balance or WHY you would think it's ok??? Now, if it' the quality of your work that he's not happy about, then that's something you'd have to handle on a case by case basis. Foreign territory to me. But, my policy on my quality guarantee is you can have your money back in full if you're not happy, but you don't get to keep your fish or animal too! Never had a single person take me up on that guarantee! Your cheap prices as mentioned certainly attracts a different clientele!

 

Why did you let him take it before full payment, looks like he screwed you twice and liked it and is coming back to bend you over again.
1st screw was the $600 price
2nd screw was not paying all 600
3rd screw is , well you tell us how that worked out.

 

I don't get it. Call him to let him know when the repainting is done and tell him to bring the amount owed. When he shows up show it to him. If he wants to take it without paying the balance tell him you cannot agree to that. If he picks it up and walks out without paying that's no time for a physical altercation or attempt at detention or recovery. Simply let him know you are calling the police to report the theft, pick up the phone and do so.

send him total bill tell him he needs to mail a check after check clears then tell him he can pick up bear otherwise cash in hand before he sets foot in your door meet him in driveway lock your door behind you

 

Unreal....I would never consider allowing a mount to go out the door without receiving payment in full first. If someone tried to remove a mount from my premises without paying for it then I would have two options: Stop him or her in his tracks by making a citizens arrest for attempted theft and detain him until the police arrive to take him away to jail or just call the caps and have them track him or her down and arrest him for theft. I once had a client on my fishing charter boat start a fist fight with his partner over who caught the biggest fish. I had to break up the fight and end the charter early. When we got back to shore he didn't want to pay me for the charter so I told him that if he didn't pay for the services that he received that he was committing felony larceny and that I would detain him until the police arrived and would also have him charged with assault for the incident on the boat too. He paid me.

 

If you let a mount walk out the door without being paid in full, you just adjusted your price to what they have already paid.

I guess we are not going to find out the final outcome , or the price of his deer heads. I have a feeling he is in one of those "I can't get that price in my area locations"
