i have been finding winter killed snapping turtles and, with the permission of the DNR, have been removing there heads. These turtles are pretty fetid and I don’t want to put them in with my beetles, will the skulls fall apart if macerated?

To some extent. But, if they are older adult turtles the skulls are pretty solid and you should just end up with the 2 parts of the skull. Hopefully you also saved the upper and lower scutes from the mouth. They add to the look when replaced when finished.

The biggest issue you will have is the bottom jaw. I would suggest zip tying them together(top and bottom) until its dry. Also I agree with SeaWolf regarding the beak.
