I have a northern pike with some pretty severe scale damage. would it be better to white out the whole fish and paint over it or does anyone have a better idea?

I'm not sure whiting out is going to do anything for scale damage. Plus, what do you mean by "scale damage"? Patches missing or raised scales?

You can fix scale that are missing by putting some silacone on the side that has good scale mix some water base paint with it and it will dry in just a little while and you have a mold of your scales and a little epoxy sculpt where it's missing them press the mold over it should work

ok that is normal for any of the Esox family. All I do is take some blending brown and shade the area in, use my metailics, and paint as normal then scale tip.

Dale's idea is always workable, provided there are not large patches all over. I would blend this in with a lighter overall shade.
