I got a moose calf in a couple weeks ago that I'd love to lifesize eventually. I'll be making a death mask tomorrow, but I'm curious how you folks would go about creating the form. Cast head and carved body? I'll attach a pic of the pose I'd like to recreate. Also curious what shops you guys would recommend for buying molding/carving supplies. I'm still very new to it and would like to get more practice in before tackling this project.[IMG]

There are full mount manikins offered for these calves. I would buy one that closely fits and alter it to your measurements.

that is something very special. take the time to carcass cast . jean roll has a good video available through WASCO that will show you how. if you learn this process it will bring your taxidermy work up to a better level. good luck. I am currently casting a reindeer calf that was three days old.

Thank you. I've been practicing casting on some smaller critters using what I learned from one of Dave Ferguson's seminars. Still got a lot of practice to do before I tackle this guy, but I'm looking forward to it. Would love to see that reindeer calf.

If you plan to carcass cast I would order the Jean Roll DVD. It is a Taxidermy Training Unlimited DVD. Meat says it is available at WASCO/ McKenzie. If you order it there, you might as well order the carcass casting video with Jan Van Hoesen (not sure of the spelling).

I have the Jan Van Hosen (in VHS!). Do you know if there anything more significant on Jean Roll's DVD that would make it worth ordering also?

I don't have the Jean Roll DVD. If I was going to carcass cast something, I would get that one because I have Jan's and it's always good to have another way to do something.

Meat those look good. I myself attack those in a different manner. I cast the head but carve the rest out of foam, because I failed trying to carcass cast. I've been carving my own fish forms for years so it wasn't that much of a stretch to adapt it to mammal forms. I may try casting again some day but so far things have been going well for me this way.
