Removing hair.......

Discussion in 'Tanning' started by Jwhargro, Jul 11, 2018 at 8:01 PM.

  1. I've got a deer hide that I have pickled and was going to do aahair on tan. The customer now wants the hair off, he wants buckskin. Can and how do I remove hair after the hide has been pickled?

I suppose you could soak it in a hydrated lime solution ant the hair would slip after a few days.

I would think if you nutrilize the skin it will be back to a raw skin if it has not been tanned and just treat it like its raw skin to remove the hair

I've tanned buckskin by stripping the hair first with a soak in lime as Joey suggested.

  5. Ok, awesome. I have some hydrated lime. How should I mix the solution?

I would by a hair off tanning kit sold by some suppliers. I have a friend that used the Knobloch's hair off tanning kit on an elk that turned out great.
