On the last couple of rattlesnake skins I did, after tanning, the skins started peeling, like the snake was shedding its skin. The skin came out plain, no color to it. Any ideas as to might have happened?

Most likely the heat from your hands when handling during skinning.

Wearing gloves will aid in reducing the amount of heat transferred though the hands.

I have found that problem happens when removing the meat, sinew etc from the underside.
Never put on a hard surface when de-fleshing.
Also, the time of year makes a difference. Was the snake about to molt. There may be some instances when the snake was about to go into a molt.
If there is a fix for that I’ve never heard of it.
