How do you guys handle customers who keep texting wanting updates on how their deer is coming along?

I run a pretty tight ship when it comes to scheduling work and when a customer drops off a deer I give them a window within 2-3 weeks of when their deer will be finished and ready for pickup. Yet I still get some people who will send me a text a month or two after they drop it off asking, "hey, just checking to see how my deer is coming." Or, "hey, when do you think my deer will be done, send some update pics."

It's usually younger people but not always. It's just annoying especially when you go out of your way to give people an accurate time frame on when their piece is going to be done.

I feel like with the younger generation it's just too easy to send a text hoping that instant gratification awaits them a few minutes later. Then I'll let them know everything is on schedule and reiterate when it will be done as I said it would at drop off time. Of course after that there is no response, not a "ok, thanks", "That's cool", "Thanks for the update". Nothing.

Just be professional and tell them that everything is on schedule, as long as you can work instead of answering texts or phone calls. From my experience, those are the ones that are hard to get in to pay and pick up when done.

Write the date of Finish on the invoice and have them sign it. Then when they text ya simply tell them to check the date on their invoice. It's the pleasure of having to work with people! Because if your people are like mine the ones that ask for an update will be the ones who show up weeks after their date and pay ya for it and take it home.

It was like that when I was in the electronics repair business. The ones who nag you the most have the most excuses why they can't pick up as soon as the repair was completed.

I am of the younger generation (27) and I can understand what you mean. I think a lot of social media and the way this generation communicates comes into play. For example, the customer sees finished deer being posted on Instagram, Facebook etc., and thinks there may be a chance his is getting close to being done. They then send the spontaneous text which is a huge pain for you, but in their world a simple text. I think it is all well meant, but I see the annoyance. Once they have one or two done they will understand the process.

My usual turn around time was about 6 months. I always told them it would be about 8 months. When I called them at 6 months they were thrilled.

If they called or texted before that I simply would reply when did I tell you? After they said well 8 months. I would say how long has it been. Well, 3 months. I would text back that they do not need to text me again because it won't make time go by any faster and that they will receive a call when it is ready. If I got another text or call I would reply with the question when did I call you. They say you didn't. I said that's right because I told you that I will call you. Please don't call me again because it takes me away from the mount I'm doing right now, which in turn, puts your mount further out than it was going to be before you called. I will call you.

  10. I believe there are some that know if they pester you hard enough, you will mount the dam thing so they will leave You the *uck alone.
Have done that for my own sanity, and have said if your in that big of hurry come get and take it some place else. They always say the same thing “no sir im not in a hurry” they dont call any more!
The one thing you can bet your ass on if they have called more than twice
“ just checking on it” your lucky if they show up to get it within a couple of months of completion.

I never give out my cell phone number to clients. I have a business phone that does not do text messages. I rarely answer my phone letting the answering machine take the calls to weed out the BS stuff that wastes my time.
