Neutralizing In Pickle?

Discussion in 'Tanning' started by CoonRiver, Mar 28, 2019.

  1. Does anyone neutralize in the pickle or do you use a separate water bath to neutralize? Is there a advantage to use a separate water bath other then cleaner water? I've done it both ways over the 24 years of being a taxidermist, if it's a small batch 5 gallons or less I usually just neutralize all at once. I use citric acid pickle since it's cheap. I get it in 50 pound bags for $8 instead of buying from supply companies for $25 for 5 pounds.

Separate bath, the directions are for neutralizing the skin or cape not the whole bath.

Where do you get citric acid for $8 a bag? I pay $7.99 for 50 lbs of salt
  4. We have a lot of commercial turkey barns here in Iowa and they use it for cleaning water lines on for the drinking water for the turkeys so I get it from the owners of the barns or the maintenance guys that travel around to the barns. I get my 50 pound bags of salt at our local grain elavators for around $4.
