Shipping-just Have To Vent

Pretty sure I am done ordering from McKenzie. Ordered 1 form from McKenzie and ordered 1 form from HQ. Both shipped from NC. HQ box was half again the size of the one from McKenzie yet shipping from McKenzie was twice as much as shipping from HQ. Don't quite understand why, but I know if I can find the form or materials else where, I will not be ordering from McKenzie again. I know this subject has been beat to death and apologize for using the company names but thought this was a bit ridiculous. Just had to vent

I completely understand what you mean. Mckenzie is high priced on everything they have, including shipping. I try to order from second2nature as much as possible. I like mckenzies, and they have a great selection. But i only go to them when i cant get it elsewhere. Just last night i was searching for a coon form that i will have to modify by cutting off the legs, and making relief cuts, and filling gaps, to make the coon in a curled up sleeping position. Unfortunately mckenzie had the size i need. And the form costs $50 more than it would at second2 nature.

Nobody likes paying shipping charges on top of high prices. The only option you have if you have really is include it in your prices for your customer. Since I am only a hobbyist I have to absorb the total cost with no return cash flow (my choice not to do commercial work). Not that I ordered a lot from them anyways but I do look towards other companies that have equivalent products for a lower cost. Is it me or does it seem every time McKenzie buys up another supply house the cost of their products goes up by 15 - 20%?

Same here, im just a hobbyist, so i pay for all of it myself. Yeah it seems that happens with mckenzie. They are kind of the cabelas of the taxidermy world. Best selction, crazy prices. What are ya gonna do...

if you live in one of the seven states that Spee-Dee Delivery operates in its about 1/4 of the cost, only thing is they only use spee-dee out of the Wisconsin facility so it won't help from the Carolina's

With McKenzie you have to specify "Cheapest Shipping" - which will then be the USPS and the slowest form of shipping in general. Generally up to 10 days from NC to Illinois (14 days on my last order!) That info came right from the McKenzie folks last time I ordered. If anybody else other than the US Postal service delivered your package, you did not specify "cheapest". This may or may not be the reason your shipping charges were seemingly excessive. But, just thought I should post it here so that everybody knows. I think they default to UPS if you don't designate and of course you will pay more...

OTS has a great video on their FB on how supply house can screw customer and actually make on handsome profit on shipping costs. Shows you right in the video exactly how it’s done.

I would imagine they get a massive discount from UPS for their shipping account. But that discount isnt passed to the customers.

When I was in the business, shipping prices didn't get a second thought. It was factored in the costs and McKenzie's shipping prices was what I went by to cover myself.

Now that I just do it for my self and a few friends, I tend to do what the others do and use McKenzie as a last resort.

SpeeDee is not always the cheapest. In fact, USPS is consistently cheaper for me here for the size boxes I normally ship (under 108") in the midwest than SpeeDee. Only problems with USPS is it's tracking stinks and they can be a bit slower...

I used to buy almost everything from McKenzie, but after their prices kept going up faster than their competition, I now only use them for about 1/4 of my supplies. I wait to order until I have enough to qualify for their highest discount rate, which basically offsets their high shipping costs. If it wasn't for the 10% discount, I'd probably buy little if anything from them.
  12. For the most part I keep my orders between Fosters and Coombes. I'm a 45 min drive to fosters and I have a friend who works in Louisiana that goes by Coombes every other week for me. Last order from mckenzie came in 3 different boxes with shipping on all 3.
  13. I understand your frustration, but I always tell the lady on the phone. All of it out of one location only. Sometimes it may make a day or two longer , which is ok with me. At least it stops multiple shipping charges.

If you use the same logic to the suppliers and their prices that is most often repeated on this forum about what taxidermists charge, we would be criticizing all the other suppliers for not charging enough. I always get a kick out of that reasoning!
As for McKenzie, they have good quality, some of the best selection of poses and sizes, and they have good customer service. In my experience they always ship quickly and they always ask how I prefer it shipped and they do warn me if it is going to be shipped from two different locations or more than one box. Shipping is going to be different from different suppliers depending on your location. Mckenzie’s shipping to me in Texas is usually overnight and just as cheap if not cheaper than other suppliers. I do shop around, as I want to save as much as I can just like anybody else, but its business! They have to make a living just like I do and if it costs me more, I charge more as long as the market will allow it...and clearly the market is accomodating their prices.
  15. It is hipocrital that some on here think they should receive top dollar for they're work, but bitch when a supplier does the same.
  16. Not really that frustrated. I've pretty much always stuck with these two suppliers anyway. I do get my paint from WASCO because I like it!!

One thing you can say about McKenzie is their packaging. They know how to pack so your stuff arrives undamaged. In all the time I have ordered I think I have only had one item damaged. And that was so minor it didn't matter (Cracked leg on a fox form if I remember correctly). I don't like paying the shipping either, and I also concur that it is more than other suppliers but maybe part of their shipping cost is to cover all that packaging material so your merchandise arrives safely? Is that really the case? Only McKenzie knows!
