Ticks Reanimating

I have been tanning my own capes for about 8 years now and didn't notice this till last season. When I rehydrate a salt dried cape that have been dried out for around 9 months some of the ticks that appeared to be dried out and dead start to walk around again mostly just the bigger fatter ones. This is crazy to me that they can go for so long without food or water, I looked it up and it appears they hibernate so they must go into that stage when the salt dries them out.

I don't like ticks crawling around, I now freeze every cape I work on for a minimum of two weeks. That seems to do the trick

I've seen it twice now sooo crazy! Ticks don't really gross me out but I am amazed how resiliant they really are.

Nothing a little Permethrin couldn't fix!

I would think that with proper salting, the saline they imbibe would toast them. I dry salted hides in a room with a dehumidifier. The heaviest of skins are rock hard in a week. Never had tick issues on salted hides.
