Fox Skull Identification

Discussion in 'Skulls and Skeletons' started by Arcanum Oddities, Aug 14, 2019.

  1. Hey, so I bought a grey fox skull off of eBay but That’s not what it is. I know it is a fox but I just can’t pin what it is. I asked in another community that I’m active on and had a few people say it looks like a red and looks like ones that they have but I’m not entirely convinced. It does look like a red but with a bit of a stubbier muzzle, which I’ve seen before. Could it be ranched?

I took some pictures so I could get input from here. The big skull beside it is my male coyote.

Not a grey but could be a red. More than likely a ranched hybrid. I have several that are red x arctic and all of them are a bit different.

never seen a grey or a red that looked like the skull in the picture. looks more like a coyote but not big enough. my guess is artic/blue or some type of cross like sea wolf said.

  10. (I realize this is an older thread but wanted to add my two cents in case someone finds this useful for identification.)

The easiest way to identify a red fox skull from a grey fox (regardless of size or muzzle length) is to take a look at the shape of the temporal lines aka sagittal crest. Vulpes vulpes (red fox) will always have a V shaped crest whereas Urocyon cinereoargenteus (grey fox) will always have a U shaped crest.

Not a grey. Red or a red hybrid. If it came from a fur farm, most likely a hybrid. The muzzle looks shorter than normal as the OP noted.
