I have some bird mounts (waterfowl & gamebirds) that I mounted many (8-9)yrs ago. Went through a divorce and the mounts got stored in a dirty garage for 3yrs. I tried to search, as I know this has been asked before, but I never could get that to work for me. Tried blowing w/air compressor and light dust did come off but feathers still look dirty. If I submerge them in water and wash won't the skins re-hydrate? I really want to salvage these mounts if possible so Thank You in advance for any advice given.

I don't have the answer for you, however, if I had this problem and no one with experience to draw from, I would use a solvent that would not be harsh, but would evaporate rather quickly while removing the grim from the feathers.
Remember, I have no experience with this, just and idea of what I would do.
