You guys talk about your little towns and such, and other taxidermist close by , I live on MD Eastern Shore in Goldsboro . Population is 269 I believe I have 7 other taxidermist in a 15 mile radius of me between MD and Delaware. Add another ten taxidermist to that if you push it out to 25 miles . As I said I had all those reasons to years ago , so your preaching to the choir on exuses . Bottom line if your happy with what and how your doing then great . That’s all that counts , again I was just trying to show what happens on the other side of the world you might say

I'm thinking deer season in Mississippi, Louisiana and alabama gonna be a little different than Maryland. I processed over 2500 deer last year. I bulked up on cooler space this year and plan on more. Processor brings in the heads which in turn gets me the processing too. And then it gets caped right so i can skin and saw horns off in 20 to 25 min. The actual money is in processing.

  5. … Mamas' don't let your babies grow up to be taxidermist
Don't let 'em skin deer or mount then ducks
Let 'em be doctors and lawyers and such
Mamas' don't let your babies grow up to be taxidermist
'Cause they'll always out in the shop and with their hands on bones and humming their favorite song.
… taxidermist like smelly old rooms and faint smell of paint fumes

Taxidermist that don't know him won't like him
And them that do sometimes won't know how to take him
    He ain't… wrong just different
but his ego wont let him do things you think is right.
    EVERY BODY NOW!!
mama dont let you babies grow up to be taxidermist.

We also run a processing business and I agree 100%! We taxidermist have been working on the wrong part of the deer! So much for our business sense!! If our processing business was solely mine (its my wife's and two oldest son's business) I would never touch another deer head and have 8 months off a year! But....it is nice to have 80% of the capes done right and if my son skins the mount I can have it caped out and antlers off in 10 minutes! if a dork brings one in half frozen with 20 pounds of neck still on it........not so much!!!

I knew you would get it Ole semi wise one!! Shoe making is a real business, thats why I used the example! With taxidermy business is a moot point! It dont apply, except for maybe with large shops working a crew! One man shops.....sorry that is a labor of love (or hate) like art! You are doing it for different reasons other than the money .....like maybe your weird probably! An artistic loner or you dont relate well with people! But unlike real 'weird artist" who occasionally do hit the big time if they are weird enough........YOU AINT GONNA AS A TAXIDERMIST!!

I think if you put a real good person with numbers. They could calculate area income, number of bucks taken and number of Taxidermist in each given area. This could show the supply and demand. In this case there two supply and demand. Some areas it be a demand for a taxidermist others there be a demand for bucks to mount.

    Been a good discussion

In my part of the world you have to rely on deer to make it in taxidermy. I get a fare share of fish and I'm about the only one that will touch a turkey. Got to get them deer!

I dont think anyone is disagreeing with you, just pointing out that things are much more complicated than just pricing! There are a lot of factors that can play into this so called business! For instance I believe it was you who said you do about 40 heads a year at $800.....I wouldn't be making a living doing 40 deer heads a year at $1200. You have to find that perfect balance between getting the price you want and the volume you need!

No business......EVER....is considered successful based on their prices, but rather on how much they profit! The IRS doesn't ask you what you charge....they ask what you make! Price....is absolutely no indicator!

Just as a "for instance"....I once worked at a larger shop out west that was charging more 25 years ago than I am now! They went bankrupt....I have not.... (yet)! Their location and overhead was just over the top and simply could not be sustained! Point being....sometimes its not what you charge that determines your success but a whole host of other factors!

Very good discussion and a pretty civil one at that. WTH? How has that happened? 13 point you bring up some very key points intended or not. Many folks are afraid of pricing themselves out of work and then have to get a "Real job". That is a valid fear. We don't know them or their situation. It is easy to tell someone to do something when you have no skin in the game, so to speak. If they go out of business, it in a sense increases the demand for your services. I agree with your opinion for the most part but there is little chance that I can get any deer in for $800 on a standard shoulder mount at this time and not because of my quality. I competed once with a standard customer deer and just missed a blue ribbon and the judge told me that at just about any other show it would have gotten a blue. It is because the demand is not there yet in my area. There are a ton of weekend warriors mounting deer heads for cash, some even do decent work. I've tried to get some of them to raise prices but very few even gave it a second thought.

We may be brothers from another mother or something here! DEER ARE IT!!! This year I am going solely deer heads! No more African safaris, no more fish no nothing!! Just deer! All the rest is just an annoyance and ruins my attitude!

  16. I'm not going to say no with the exception of snakes, but I intend on pricing a lot of stuff I don't want out. If they wanna pay what I'm gonna call legal rape.

You say this like I don’t already know all the factors, go back and read all my post on it . I’ve been doing this full time for over 20 years and Taxidermy for 34 . I’ve seen and heard it all I’ve done or tried everything that is stated here . I owned a store we’re we cut over 1400 deer a year and took in 300 pcs a year mostly deer heads , I’m color blind so I don’t do fish or birds , so basically I do anything with fur/hair . I only take in 60 pcs a year at my decision. 50 of which are deer , As I stated all my mounts are done by June 1 . As I never ever want to be backed up as I was when I owed the store, that was from 1990 till 2000 at that time I charged $450 for a shoulder mount , If the 61st pcs comes in the door my clients know it becomes next years mount and is counted that way , if and only if I want to do it I do at that time if not it won’t be done till January of the next year and be considered number 1 mount in the door for that year . This is what works for me and how I do my thing . That I’m happy with , so please don’t say I don’t know all the factors I’m pretty good at business and knowing how it works . I’m not telling anyone to raise their price to $825 like mine , I get that the different areas have a cap off point , but what I am saying is everyone should get to or as close to that cap off point as possible. But for anyone to say I’d rather work more and make less money cause their not afraid of a little hard work makes no scence . That’s the part I don’t get .

Most people can't live too well off $25,000 a year

Your profit will also depend on how much you pay for materials for those deer heads.
Some people have less in a deer head than others. Add in less hours in a deer head and you can be making around the same profit charging $600 as you will $800.

This is why I said I deleted my attempts at addressing this dead horse three times! I never said you didn't know nor did anyone else, we were just simply pointing out some of the factors that have never really been addressed in the 1200 times this topic has been brought up! Basically generalizing the topic and not directing a thing towards you personally!
