Pickling In Cold Weather

    I am going to do my own pickling and tanning soon for the first time. I may need to do it in the garage which usually stays at 32-38 degrees. Does cold weather have a big effect on quality and overall time the pickle takes?
    I could do it in my basement if 1. My wife doesnt know and 2. If it doesnt smell. Otherwise itll have to be done in the garage.

    Using saftee acid , citric will be fine to use in the basement and not smell the house up but keep a cover on your pickle.
    As doing it I the garage you’ll be fine at those temps. Getting lower than that can cause the salt to bottom out and it’ll start to freeze ( hence why oceans freeze)

    Thanks for your help Frank. I was going to ask about putting a cover on it. Wasnt sure if that was ok to do or not.

    In really cold weather, I put an aquarium heater on the bottom of the tub and covered it with a piece of PVC pipe cut in half with large holes drilled all around it. Wrapping the tub in insulation will help keep the warmth in.
