It's a bit of a nuance, but business collect sale tax, they do not charge sale tax. Don't be upset at a business forced to do the governments bidding.

3 Bears, the exemption form you submitted is the easy fix for you in your state where you are required to collect sales tax on taxidermy services. However, in a state such as mine where taxidermy is exempted from sales tax we don’t collect them and any use tax we will start paying for McKenzie supplies comes right out of our profits. There is a resale form we can submit to McKenzie which will be sufficient for them to sell us goods without collecting use tax but the form calls for a Transaction Privilege License #. As a note: a regular business license is not required to perform taxidermy in AZ (just an AZGameFish Permit); but getting a Transaction Privilege License (TPL) means the State will now make you responsible for paying a Transaction Privilege Tax (TPT) based on all your business income. It’s the same rate as the state use or sales tax. So, in AZ without a TPL you cannot be exempted via a form from McKenzie’s tax collections, plus you cannot then recover your extra costs for these use taxes without raising your prices. If you do get a state TPL you will not need to pay more to McKenzie for state use tax, but now the State will require a TPT rate be levied on your business income which must be accounted for and paid. It all becomes an inequitable quandary of sorts and clearly differs by state.

When I was doing taxidermy in Prescott Valley, AZ and in Chino Valley, AZ the towns required a business license, but nearby Prescott, AZ did not. Depends on where you live.

I guess all I can say is what a cluster flock and raise your prices the percentage that the use tax is and pay the use tax, that way you still make what you expect.
We are required to have a taxidermy license from our DNR to perform taxidermy for others but you also have to register your business with the secretary of state. Many do not, they fly under the radar because the two branches of government to date, haven't worked together. When I opened my business I planned to make my presence known so I jumped through the required hoops.

Legitimate or not, McKenzie has a long history of padding your bill, mainly on shipping they have a more profitable business in the shipping department than in the supply dept., ordered a pair of turtle eyes for less than $10 and came in a 12x12 box with $18 shipping, one Axis form $68 shipping, measured box and weighed it went to U.P.S. website to return it was only $17.70 to send back, easy to fix don't order from them unless you have to, if customer wants something from them tell them they have to pay the extra cost upfront, ordered 10 deer forms from Jim Aldred was only $78 for all 10, I've been done with McKenzie, only as a last resort

I may have missed something, but did anyone who collects sales tax for their services from their customers mention whether or not the state pays them for collecting it?

Most certainly not Joe. They hold the threat of criminal charges over you, if you don't do it. Like I said before, I do what they ask in this instance and move on, not willingly mind you.
