Brown Pelican

Discussion in 'Bird Taxidermy' started by bigjohn123, Feb 8, 2020.

  1. Looking for any input on preserving and mounting a pelican how do you preserve the pouch or do they sell a cast head for a brown prlican and yes this is for the state.

Let me ask you a question. How many times have you see a brown pelican with its crop full? It's much like seeing a bass with it's gills flared and mouth agape. It happens in a fleeting second and then disappears. Still, if you're intent on providing that appearance, mount the bird as usual and stuff a nylon hose with polyfill. Set it inside the beak and then tape the beak closed. The hose will allow you to get rid of the lumps in polyfill and creat a more realistic appearance.

maybe you want lumps to look like fish heads

Would think the mount would be the most natural pose for the bird. Unless it was in flight, most often they are just sitting around. Not much of the pouch visible at all.

Nobody mention having the pouch extended just preserving it
