Hey Kerby I have recently had requests of preserving a tortoise shell from a pet that’s died. One was 80 pounds. How would one go about that? The only thing I could think of was to remove every thing and then pressure wash the inside. I turned them both done since I didn’t want to end up with a smelly shell or the scales falling off.
    Love the mount you did.

Thanks. On the shell you have to clean really well. Make sure you get all the stuff out of the backbone on the carapace. I soaked the inside of the shell with rubbing alcohol.

Beautiful colors. Is that all actual color or did you have to repaint it? Very nice looking snake.

I had to add all the color back in.

Ahh, I asked for real though. I had a wonderful rainbow boa that died. Broke my heart to lose it and I skinned it out to save it. Dried the skin but all the color faded. Really bad. Was wondering how you managed to keep the color. Too bad about loosing that snake but you more than did it justice.

Thanks, on snakes the earth tone colors tend to not fade, but blues, reds, oranges yellows, greens, etc do fade and have to be replaced once the mount is dried. All sorts of methods: air brushing, paints with a brush, pan pastels, etc. Also you can use the same iridescent shimmers that they use on fish scale tipping to replace those on snake scales.
