How do I achieve those beautiful clean, not slicked down shoulder mounts with bright white throat patches? I use commercially wet tanned capes and I wash them in a washing machine before mounting. I just can’t seem to get the look I would like. Thanks

Have you tried air fluffing them in the dryer?

Put them in a dryer half full of dry dowels and dry on "air dry" for 15-30 minutes.

Stretching the skin too much toward the back can also make it look slicked down.

Jimmy Rimrock Yeah, they come to snuff the rooster

I wash with pert plus after prep, just before mounting, rinse until clean water, spin dry. A little bit of back brush as it dries.

You can wash after mounted and dried, but it needs to be quick and "not in the face" to avoid rehydration and movement.

A little time spent grooming can go a long ways to improve appearance.
