When it gets stiff I put it in the microwave for 30 seconds or until it's soft

I like using 70% or 90% isopropyl alcohol to soften and to feather out edges

 

You can also mix the two parts with hotwater.

Depends on how you prefer to use it. I know somebody that recently showed me how he wets the living crap out of his AS with water and works it much softer than I ever have. Of course you'd have to be careful with skin mounts and re-hydrating. But, I see no reason why you couldn't take the Safety Solvent a little further and do the same with lesser re-hydrating issues. I've also heard of folks mixing AS with Apoxie Paste for something in the middle. Also, "Klei" is a newer product that Rick Krane uses that I guess feathers much nicer than A.S.

 

Apoxie Safety Solvent works better for me than anything I have tried. It does smell worse than water though.

 

As mentioned above it really depends upon your use. It's my favorite epoxie to sculpt and use! I've used it on fish heads, fins, antlers...the list goes on. I have a couple containers of Epo-grip fin magic and teeth....and they didn't last long on the shelf before going bad. I've never had Apoxie sculpt go bad. I recently learned that they last longer if frozen so hopefully that makes them last longer on the shelf because they are mighty expensive!

In regard to use. Depending upon what I'm doing I have a small container with water next to me while sculpting. Once I have the desired amount of apoxie-grip on the fish head or what ever I'm working on I dip my finger in the water and smooth out the apoxie grip as desired. Sometimes I dip a tool that I'm using to sculpt with in water. It may take several finger dips in water to get it smooth as desired.

I've never needed to use a micro-wave but it sounds like it works? As mentioned in the couple posts above you can also add warm water while you are mixing part A with part B.

If you guys go to your hardware store and get Rock Hard Water Putty.... it is the same product but 1/3 the price... the taxidermy puttys are just marketed in smaller sizes with name brands... just a marketing gimmick.... dont fall for it!
