Yes hydrate by making a mix of 4 oz of salt 1/4 cup of Downey to a gallon of tepid water. Sponge this on the flesh side, fold and place in fridge overnight. By next day you should be hydrated to where you can stretch them width wide .

  2. Could I use Dawn or another laundry soap instead?

Nope that has a higher pH and can cause slippage. Follow directions and you’ll be fine when you mess with not following directions and crap happens well it’s because there’s a system that should be followed to achieve certain goals .

Salt is going to prevent acid swell any and all professional tanneries advice this!! Some folks like to mislead here!!
Just Downey and water may and at times will work but we add salt to prevent any swelling or other issues that a cape can have. Our chemist here and other professional tanner and tanneries always advise a bit of salt . It’s a cheap preventative way of saving tanned skins. Not just my opinion but a fact!
