Okay so a customer brought in a 28 inch steelhead to be mounted.I don't do fish but I told him I could get a replica done for him,he agreed.I got in touch with a company that charged $12..00 per inch (taxidermist's price !!!) but also added a $42.99 crating fee + shipping from Florida was$130.00.So my question was ( since I HAD NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE).did this seem like a good way to go ,or should I look for a different company next time!Total price for a 28 inch steelhead complete was about $545.00.I didn't think my question was so crazy!

Drob, after 45 years in molding fish, I don't think 12.00 per inch is out of line for an unfinished blank. My price for molding, casting, finishing and painting is 29.50 per inch. That is from their fish, complete without shipping. I am going to have to raise my per inch price due to Biden. Many of the products needed for repo fish work are by products of petroleum, and all have gone through the roof including boxes some are now charging for. Add the increased fuel costs and other fees for shipping, and we are darn near priced out of business. I am fortunate to have a very large mold collection with over 100 Steelhead molds. so that is an offset that keeps me from having to purchase. With that said, if you don't mold fish, then you are going to have to pay the price to purchase. Hope this helps Drob

I haven’t had a blank in my hands that I would pay 12 per inch for from any big supplier. Most are in the 6-7.
I’m assuming 12 per is either finished.
But yes shipping is crazy. Had to charge a guy 150 to ship a 41 in steelhead 4 hours away.

I'd really like to see a picture of this finished steelhead at $12 bucks an inch...

Similar to big game and other mounts not all fish taxidermists are created equally. Generally the higher the $ the more detail and the better quality product. Higher quality blanks are mighty expensive without any paint on them! Obviously if both sides are painted for a pedestal mount the price goes up significantly. The longer the fish the more $. Klaus has a high quality 28" steelhead/rainbow for $285. That's $10/inch just for the blank! Add in shipping charges and things definitely get pricey!

I guess it comes down to your client. Is he willing to pay the price for the best blank and painting available or would be pleased with just an mount?
