Picked up a elk hide from the tannery and the hair is oily. Ask them what to do and was told to set it out in the sun.
    Thinking about washing with Dawn.
    many comments or suggestions??

I wash all my capes in a mix of tide , dawn and a smell good shampoo and conditioner. I squirt a good amount of each in a cold water bath and mix then give cape or hide a god agitation wash up and down, rubbing it into hair then drain and rinse good with clear cold water. I hang to drip out then wrap in towels to get excess water out and mount .

If it’s a dry tan wall hanger sun as the tannery said won’t dry oils out. You can try a few things here.
    Woolite rug cleaner.
Rubbing it down with lacquer thinner or acetone
A huge garbage bag with some sawdust in it and add a cup of order less mineral sprits and shake that around.
I wouldn’t wash it if it’s a wall hanger only because it’ll get a bit hard again ( normal) but as stated if it’s a mount by all means go for a good washing!
