400 And Less For Deer Shoulder Mounts

There's a guy on Facebook arguing that he would never pay over 400 for a deer mount and that his taxidermist only charges him 275 because he sends him so much work. That his taxidermist charges 375 to everyone else and does great work and he knows several taxidermists that do excellent work that charge under 400. Oh well..

I only do fish but I know for the most part of your sending your capes out you have around 200-250 into a shoulder mount just in materials!

But he doesn't need the money he has a "Real job" only does deer heads for fun. I get that BS story from guys often enough when they call me to check my prices. They know so n so and he only charges them that much, why do I charge so much? My answer is always with a question. Is he any good? If so I'll sub out some work to him and still make money. The answer is always he's OK. I just chuckle and wish em luck.

Guy probably hasn’t had a mount done in 10-15 years

He posted some in his house not closeups. They look like decent work. That's part of what is so disturbing.

The great thing about being a sole proprietor is that one can charge what he wants. If he works cheap, he deprives his family while rewarding mostly unappreciative clients.

raising prices to keep current may cost a person a few customers. on the plus side, you'll work less and make more :)

There is a taxidermist in the mid west that is charging 395.00 if he uses a mannikin “he makes”. If he has to buy a mannikin the price is 425.00. Makes no sense to me.

I have gotten to the point where I don't even charge to do a deer head. I just say no and then I don't have to do it.

    Retirement from taxidermy is bliss!
