I have an idea involving mouse/rat taxidermy that comes with a question i haven’t encountered yet. How long is too long for the skin to sit off of a form after skinning? I know you need to keep it moist but is there a limit to how long you can do that before something bad starts happening (keep in mind i am thinking in terms of an hour or two not days).

Well you can’t mount it raw so the hide needs to be skinned flesh and either tanned or mounted with dry preserve. Your fine as long as it’s in the correct conditions cool no humidity.if tanned you will have no issues whatsoever. But dry preserve gets rubbed on just before mounting but not really before as it will start drying the hide out . Once you start mounting you shouldn’t stop until done mounting.
