New Mount Question

Raising your prices doesnt fix that problem. I went way up and I'm 35 heads ahead of last yr with 60 days to go.

I charge $885 , and all my mounts are competition quality

 

$750. That's about $200 higher than anybody within 3 hrs of me. Average price around here is $300 to $550. I went out of that range to try and retire and only do processing but it failed. Deer processing is where I make my real money.

way back when the PA game commission required all Taxidermists to take a test in order to get a license issued by the PGC. in order to get your license you also had to bring your mounts to the test center as the PGC needed to make sure you knew what you were doing AND...you also had to perform some form of taxidermy in front of them.

i was a non licensed beginner learning taxidermy. i entered small competitions and learned. a good friend also showed me how to do things.
in 1993 i entered the mounts i would need to bring to the test center in the PA State competition, i entered as an amateur since i didnt have my license, i couldnt enter as a professional.
all my mounts won ribbons and i took the award for best all around taxidermist.
no one came close to me, i had no competition.
no problem getting my license

 

Again actually read what I said , not tanned probably DP and not done correctly, meaning whatever way you choose to do your cape there is a right and wrong way to do it and it was done wrong . There are a few on here that do DP and there mounts are done correctly and look great , Dave Byrde maybe is one . Think I have the name wrong but I believe you know who I’m talking about . You assumed I was downing it and I wasn’t at the time . Thank you for the compliment on my work , I appreciate it . If you don’t want to do so many raise your price more and then have a cut off number. I take in NO more then 60 pcs a year . I don’t do birds or fish as im color blind and can’t blend colors on feet bills and of course fish . I don’t do things I’m not great at or hate to do . That’s how I stay sane .

Not that you'd understand, but several mounts that won national contests. The late Don Steven's could mount a blue ribbon DP deer that you could never tell the hide prep. Mounting one PROPERLY takes more effort than a tanned hide. The ONE redeeming quality about DP is that it NEVER has bug issues.
If there's a gap, it was likely treated with DP ( though I recall similar issues with pickle tanned hides using battery acid having shrinkage). But that isn't the worst issue. The person who mounted it has no concept of deer anatomy. He'd have dicked up a tanned hide just as easily.

If theres a gap it wasn't stitched and glued properly. I do DP on all mounts and dont have this issue. This whole issue is strictly from lack of knowledge. I will say the $300 dollar guys from my area do way better work.

 

His is better but still not great standards, but my standards are very high

 

I'm not a deer guy but I do know what they look like (I think ha!) And maybe it's just the camera angle/shadows? But, to me the transition area from the neck to the shoulder on the deer's left side especially looks goofy. Looks like a cylindrical shelf with too harsh of a transition like the form was shaved down but not accurately???

Ears are horrible. The rest ain't horrible.

 

It has no anatomical anatomy of a live deer. Study live deer photos. Hunting magazine covers if you have nothing else. Ears bad, antlers cocked forward not flowing with the skull , lip line, nostrils , eye anatomy and symmetry , unnatural hair pattern’s. Have a correct one done and compare. Use GOOD lighting. Good flashlight if need be. Study photos and FRESH dead deers hair patterns. Take good side photos of your next deer so as to get proper antler angle.
