Boar Cape Tanning Help

    My father and uncle went out to Texas and shot 3 boars from 150-190 range. They sent me the capes to mount for my shop because they wanted to help me get a few capes when they went.
    So I've heard, "send it to a tannery" from everywhere and yes I will be sending the largest one to a tannery. So while I have 3 I'm going to try and tan the smallest one myself.

    I turned everything then I power washed the cape and got almost all of the fat and flesh off. I then fleshed around the face and some of the smaller pieces of fat that wasn't blown off by the power washer. Then I salted it for a day, today is the 2nd day of salt then I will put it in a pickle.

    I could use some advise on what steps are next, do I degrease before pickle? Everyone said you won't be able to get through the shield but I think I got it off with the power washer because I can see all the hair follicles all over the cape.

    Like I said I have 3 capes and I wanted to try and tan one myself. If I screw it up its not a big deal I have 2 more.

    Pickle before you degrease , leave in pickle for 3 days, thin it on machine or sharp draw knife back in pickle for 2 days then degrease and finish your tanning process .

    What do you use to degrease?
    I read another thread where a guy said gas?

    In the older days , buy a degreasing agent from pro 1 or any supply Co that can go in your pickle , then tan it out and lastly wash in dawn. That will do it

    I like this products a lot for degreasing https://trubondtanning.com/ or Pro1 products work well.
    Follow directions to a T and you’ll be fine
    Three days pickle, shave and then degrease back into to the pickle overnight, drain , neutralize, tan oil if required

    I tan my own hogs all the time. I’ve only had 3 commercial tanned. I ran them with krowtann. I degrease with epogrip or kemal4. Then I add McKenzie degreaser/relaxer to the krowtann when I tan it. I tan them for a few extra days just to be sure they soak in well. And then use the relaxer/degreaser or epogrip to do my final wash after neutralizing. Never had a problem C0FD312E-4581-44ED-AB1C-F66E57D09909.jpeg

    I can guarantee you didn’t get the shield off with a power washer!

    Why would you send a pig to a tannery. Afterbyou prep them, the hard work is done.

    what i believe he is saying is that the shield on pigs can be from 1" to 2 1/2" thick +. you have to shave it down completely. if you don't you could get slippage. I know from experience that just using a beamer and a sharp knife it might take several hours just to get the shield off.
