I ordered and received a McKenzie 6500 form (65-6315) that is obviously a button buck form. My cape is 6.75 x 15 x 15 x 16. I didn’t realize this form was for a button buck as I was only focusing on the measurements, my mistake. Anyway, after the form and shipping, I want to get the next one right! So what 6500 form would you order if this was your cape? And yes, I’m new at this! Thank you

I’m not sure where the problem is. Are you mounting a buck but not a button buck? This form is for a rather small buck but not necessarily a button buck. Those measurements are typical of a button buck so McKenzie is describing it that way.

Correct, it’s not a button buck cape. Cape is bigger than the form in the shoulders and I don’t think it will work. Like I said, I’m new at this and seems like I’ve chosen a difficult one to get right for my first mount. I know that it will be terrible but I’ve got to start somewhere!
    Thanks

You need to find a form manufacturer that fits your areas deer . Is your neck measurements correct? Eye to nose measurements are just as important. McKenzie does sell a slim neck form for deer like yours and Texas deer . If you can’t find said form you will need to learn how to alter form . One easy way is cut head off form and make a X cut down the neck to shoulder, taking away material as needed, then using a crank tie down strap and five min epoxy, squeeze it back together then foam the cut back in .

Yes sir, the measurements are correct. Cape came from east cost capes and I measured it again when I got it. Thanks

Alter the form to do whatever you want it to do.

You’re saying the cape fits everywhere except that the cape is too big in the shoulder area? If that’s the case, I would cut slots in the arm pit area to tuck in some of the extra skin and/or add a little girth to the shoulder area with foam or with clay.

Update…I finally got time and got it mounted and drying! Learned a whole lot. Had to stretch cape with inner tube to get it to fit (thanks George Roof and the archives), I didn’t think the nose on the form being uneven would be a big deal, it is/was. Should have made form fit nose and not other way around (I’ve read that on here multiple times!). My antler set was a tad too low, need to thin around lips more and make slit wider to make tucking easier, and I think I can do better on eyes next time with good reference photos now. But all in all, it resembles a deer and when it dries, I’ll figure out the finish work (back to the Rick Carter A to Z dvd). My power is off now so I don’t have any light to take additional pictures. But here’s one from yesterday.

You really need to look at reference pics , you should see no clay around eye . Eye skin should be up against glass eye . That can’t be fixed after drying, less you rehydrate. I know your just learning but not knowing what you did wrong don’t help . So please have tuff skin and except critiques, it will only help you . Goodluck and stay with it . Join your state association and go to there show or the closest competition/show to ya . You will learn a lot .
