5 sandhills and 4 big Canadas came in a couple days ago. Not enough room in the freezer for all of them whole, so it's skinning time and why not flesh them too.

Doesn't matter really awesome non the less. You do mounts like that and don't duck hunt? I was wrong for assuming you would have been an avid waterfowler. o_O

Beautiful bird. It's looking pretty good. In my opinion canary type birds are rough to get looking soft.

I'm bad addicted to bow hunting deer...like bad. Honestly the only reason we do Taxidermy at all is to pay for our hunting. It why we only work taxidermy from February through September. Duck season is during deer season here so that's out. Deer season closes Jan 31 so I'm about to get back to mounting full time. The mounts I've been doing during the last month or so have been personal mounts, done on rain days. The dead mount and Mallard were for another Taxidermist that was in a bind and I told him I'd knock them out if the weather was bad. I'm not opposed to duck hunting and I'm sure it would help me improve, but for now I still can't go and miss an opportunity to bow hunt.

Imagine my surprise when while talking to Ted Wyenberg many years back I discovered he did not hunt waterfowl. Guy could mount a seriously good duck too. It sounds like you don't need another addiction Brooke so pass on trying waterfowl hunting. As was often heard on the TV show Monk " you'll thank me later"! :):):)

In Coastal Oregon. We hunt in the temperate rain forest. We go hiking in the woods with a gun on sunny days and do our serious hunting for our little black tailed deer during the rain. The more stormy and miserable it is out there, the better.

Bow hunting in the rain isn't for me. Unlike shooting an animal with a gun, the bloodtrail is how you locate your animal. If you shoot one and it's raining it makes it difficult to impossible to find. I've bowhunted only for over 20 years now and though I've had deer drop dead within sight, most run 80 yards or more. Getting mature deer within 30 yards of you to even get a shot is hard enough, I definitely don't need to add extra obstacles:). I shot this guy at 830am. It started raining at 845 and even with a heart shot if we didn't have our dog (yes she's actually our tracker) we would have had to grid search to find him.

I'll keep my rain days for playing in the shop :) PXL_20221111_155757350.PORTRAIT~2.jpg

100% why I was told to turn down pinfeather birds .. cus it only take one to ruin a reputation .. I mount Pinfeather birds but if they dont turn out like I think it should they never leave my shop ... Thvat quil looks just like one i did last yr and it was loaded with pins head to tail , just mounted a lessor and the entire head and neck are pins no regular feathers ..but Its good enough it can go ... Sucks cus everything looks great but the head and neck ... its OK .. I hate spending a ton more time like on the lessor twice as much time as usual so Im charging for it ... Ive stared charging 100.00 extra for badly pined birds if i choose to work on them ... I have a beautiful euro that was pined up bad , no feather loss till I blow dried it .. I mounted it cus its for a good buddy but it lost so many feathers its garbage IMO so all that work for nothing ... Not even gonna charge him long as he dont tell who mounted it .. He wont just sucks his bird didn't turn out and its not like we see euros all the time out here .. Yup pinfeathers really suck ... rather never deal with them ... but thats a pipe dream .. Just when you think your getting better at pinfeathers you get the curve ball and it turns out like the turd it was when you got it ...

    Nice buck!

When I bow hunted for about 10 years, we hunted early season (the month of September) for that reason. We had mid November (roughly) to mid December to hunt, the late season, so, I do understand why you wouldn't want to hunt in the rain. We usually hit the highest mountains with snow on them to have good blood tracking. We tracked several after it started raining and it was difficult but doable. The last 2 a lot of luck was involved, so we stopped hunting when it rained. We were older and wiser by then. Now, hunt with the rifle and it's during the one month season, which is October and it is usually a rainy month.

I know y'all that live up north basically have to mount pinfeathered birds, but down here there's no reason to. I get the "kids first duck" or "dogs first retrieve" calls all the time and I tell them to shoot a late season bird of that same species, we'll mount it as a deadmount on a panel and you can put the picture next to it. Some agree, some think I'm uppity for not taking every bird that I get called about. I'm lucky to have my shop in the South, and the fact that I work for myself means I can work on what I want. One thing I do know is if any Taxidermist mounts a crap bird, the clients will never admit to anyone that thier bird was crap. They just tell anyone who sees thier mount your name.
