I just got in a few Western quail. Gambles, Scaled and Mearns. First I've seen in person. What cool little dudes they are! I can wing it so to speak but figured I'd dip into the knowledge pool first. I have a couple questions on washing, dryng, the medium to use to tumble or not to tumble? I've done Chucker's so if it's the same only smaller that info would help.

Same process as a Chucker I would think … buddy of mine says they’re easy but I can’t even skin one without ripping it and the head … who knows supposedly they invert .. never got that far . Always ruin them before I get there so I gave u on Quail .. to small for my hands ..,

Well ByGolly sent me here to see about the Quail questions! Anyhow, i no longer use white gas for quail- as they dry to fast. Just dawn and i hand flesh them with a dull knife tool. Heads invert just go easy with them. I Make my incisions from the clavicle to the vent- so you dont stress the skin when skinning. And i mark the top of that incision with thread and a couple od half hitch knots so i know where to start sewing-- very important so that the patterns line up...

Thanks man , might have to give them a shot when the season rolls around .. I’ve ruined so many trying over the yrs , but really haven’t tried to hard enough to mount one .. never had a clue how to do them and never had any requests to mount quail .. but I do get folks now and then that I’ve turned away .. hate doing that but I won’t take work that I have no idea how to to do it … I dont wing it … Like Big Game ..it’s on the list of things to do ..

If possible, GET THIS BOOK. RDA has 2 how-to articles in it as well as Kent Reedy, Shane smith, Frank Newmyer, as well as others. Resized_20230219_190107_1557663533264963.jpg

That book has how-to instruction on quail, grouse, pheasant, song birds, shore birds, woodcock and one on turkeys. All are very different styles.

RDA thanks for the advise. Those little birds are as cool as they get. I haven't gassed birds in a long time so that will work in my favor. Do you wrap bodies or is there a place to buy them? Appreciate your time sir. Also thanks for all the advise from all. Luckily I have 3 of each and the customer only wants one of each. Hoping I will have a set for myself. I've wrapped bodies as I'm old enough that was the only way in the "Good ole days"

I carve all my small bird bodies out of cheap foam blocks i get at walmart. Fast and easy-- but wrapping is another good way or just buy commercial forms from just about any supply company. You can gas small birds but i usually dont. I hand flesh them with a dull tool like a butter knife and wash in dawn. I gas all waterfowl though.

Like shaved deer hide for pheasant waddles from one of the contributors. Some inventive things in there. Your articles helped me a lot and got me thinking about making my own artificial heads.

I have many of the instructional books from WASCO but that one escaped my notice. Always have trouble getting the right look on upland birds in a standing pose. found one on eBay for $85. Ouch!
    Still looking.

Those I'm familiar with and have mounted a few. Great job and not an easy pose to pull off

Yup I had it , loaned it out and probably never see it again so I don’t loan stuff anymore .. I’m completely WASCO manuel trained at least the basics came from those books .. great info in those ..
Not a bad deal for new , but you’ll just incur McKenzie’s overly exaggerated high shipping price. That likely costs more than the damn book probably run ya 75.00 after shipping and any other fee they can think up to screw us outta more hard earned money .. Last place you’ll catch me spending a penny of my own money .. Companies like this should suffer for being greedy . Oh and Vandykes is the same company so screw them too .. do your damndest not to order from These places they screw us all .. time they reap it ..
