OK with me that you identify as a taxidermist even if your references suggest you’re more an enthusiast than a practitioner. It matters not which if you love doing it. I’m satisfied that you are unlikely to be game cop or on any DNR payroll. I shall henceforth pay you the respect you deserve as a man and as a fellow practitioner. One can’t be too careful these days what with feds and staties monitoring these forums for the smallest reason to attempt entrapment. I appreciate your kind words toward me and your gracious invitation of hospitality, but I must decline. I no longer live in Texas. And I don’t know you well enough to be comfortable with knocking a few back with a relative stranger.

I have always found Shakespeare’s Polonius’ advice to (his son) Laertes in his play Hamlet to be sound advice for everyone. Here’s a part of that with emphasis on friendship:

"...There; my blessing with thee.
And these few precepts in thy memory
See thou character. Give thy thoughts no tongue,
Nor an unproportioned thought his act.
Be thou familiar, but by no means vulgar.

DRT, everyone starts somewhere. when i was learning i entered a mini competition at pymatuning state park here in PA. i entered a hanging dead grouse in the novice category. that bird took first place best of category which bumped me into the licensed pro category. while i was still unlicensed i entered that same hanging dead grouse along with 3 other specimens in different category at the PA state competition. i entered all those categories in preparation to take the state taxidermy exam where the applicant has to present mounts that they have done. i figure if they won 1st, 2nd or 3rd...i was all set to go for the exam.

all my mounts won ribbons. that hanging dead grouse won a first place blue ribbon in the pro category and missed best of category by a few points. if it had won best of category it would have bumped me into the masters category with my first ever grouse mount...LOL

as it was, i won best all around taxidermist in PA as an unlicensed novice in 1993

see...anyone can do it, stick with it.

 

I have to admit, at least this is the best tasting crow I ever had to eat.

 

Goodness- I love you, Joe! Danny and I were just discussing you the other day and hoping you were doing well. I hope you feel that one of these days when our paths cross again, you'll remember us enough to throw one back and talk about old times!!

 

Super nice to hear from you and the Dan Man. Of course I'll remember you should our paths cross, perhaps at some taxi show (the Good Lord willing and my knees hold out.) My best wishes to you and that bird man of yours from here to eternity.

I absolutely love every DVD that I own by Danny Owens. His way of teaching un orthodox techniques and his Southern gentleman way of speaking really makes them enjoyable to watch. They have been very helpful.
