    DRT,

OK with me that you identify as a taxidermist even if your references suggest you’re more an enthusiast than a practitioner. It matters not which if you love doing it. I’m satisfied that you are unlikely to be game cop or on any DNR payroll. I shall henceforth pay you the respect you deserve as a man and as a fellow practitioner. One can’t be too careful these days what with feds and staties monitoring these forums for the smallest reason to attempt entrapment. I appreciate your kind words toward me and your gracious invitation of hospitality, but I must decline. I no longer live in Texas. And I don’t know you well enough to be comfortable with knocking a few back with a relative stranger.

I have always found Shakespeare’s Polonius’ advice to (his son) Laertes in his play Hamlet to be sound advice for everyone. Here’s a part of that with emphasis on friendship:

    "...There; my blessing with thee.
And these few precepts in thy memory
See thou character. Give thy thoughts no tongue,
Nor an unproportioned thought his act.
Be thou familiar, but by no means vulgar.
Those friends thou hast, and their adoption tried,
    Grapple them to thy soul with hoops of steel;
But do not dull thy palm with entertainment
    Of each ne-hatch’d unfledged comrade.
    Beware
Of entrance to a quarrel, but being in,
Bear’t that the opposed may beware of thee.
Give every man thy ear, but few thy voice;….”

And this from Post #82 by Ron B on the subject: Being An Expert:

“If I could give one piece of advice to all people, it would be to know history. It is never more relevant than when using it to predict the future. And after that...it would be to trust no one until they have proven themselves to you!”

    Then….
Find someone on this forum you trust that I can send a self addressed stamped envelope to, unsealed, with an MO for $50.00 to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital who will verify the deed will be done. I can't donate it in your name or address of which I know neither.

  5. Joe i trust you will donate it. I myself trust until proven not to. Yes i am a start up and dont know that i would ever be able to call myself a full Taxidermist for i am not sure that it is an art that could be mastered. You could ask Gene Smith about me the man that taught me what i know so far at Final Destination Taxidermy Mr. Henry Durant current took me to his house to meet him and buy a deer profile with the muscle structures for me to use as refrence and showed me where i was making my mistakes with the eyes. Joe you have no reason to thank me for the kind words for they aee all tru. For those that dont know they should look into a legend like you. I thank you Joe for everything you have done to help the taxidermy world. For now i will just keep trying maybe one day i will be something like a taxidermist.

DRT, everyone starts somewhere. when i was learning i entered a mini competition at pymatuning state park here in PA. i entered a hanging dead grouse in the novice category. that bird took first place best of category which bumped me into the licensed pro category. while i was still unlicensed i entered that same hanging dead grouse along with 3 other specimens in different category at the PA state competition. i entered all those categories in preparation to take the state taxidermy exam where the applicant has to present mounts that they have done. i figure if they won 1st, 2nd or 3rd...i was all set to go for the exam.

all my mounts won ribbons. that hanging dead grouse won a first place blue ribbon in the pro category and missed best of category by a few points. if it had won best of category it would have bumped me into the masters category with my first ever grouse mount...LOL

as it was, i won best all around taxidermist in PA as an unlicensed novice in 1993

see...anyone can do it, stick with it.

  7. Well i am glad it was not a live grouse. I am going to stick with it a friend is going to let me work on some turkeys if he gets some this year. All i can do is try and in my opinion have the chance to memorialize mother natures creatures is an awesome feeling especially when you get it right. I appreciate your story it gives me hope and congratulations on those ribbons and that grouse. With the option of being able to reachout to to folks on this board it makes this journey a little easier i think than back in the day when there was no option for help. I admire all the taxidermist that had to just figure it out and take all their advice to heart when i recieve any of it. I will post pics and ask for your honest opinions so that i will be able to better my craft as time goes on. Thank you again for sharing that story with me i really enjoyed reading it and imagining how you must have felt when all that happend. Congratulations on such an experience.

I have to admit, at least this is the best tasting crow I ever had to eat.

Goodness- I love you, Joe! Danny and I were just discussing you the other day and hoping you were doing well. I hope you feel that one of these days when our paths cross again, you'll remember us enough to throw one back and talk about old times!!

  10. Joe like i said before your the man thank you sir. I hope one day i get to meet you it would be such an honor. I am about to start doing a canvasback duck that has a hole in one wing. My plan is to do a standing pose i reckon. I will post pics and look foward to your advise and opinion on it. It will be my first one i am still debating on the habitat but i am going to try to use stuff i naturally find around where i live. Thank you again Joe for the donation i never doubted you would send it. I also read the article you wrote back in 2018 i believe about rogue taxidermy designs and how the habitats are now days balanced on a small stick or how they dont depict the animals expression or why or where the animal is looking at with the expression on their face. I think i understood the article and it was an interesting read to me and definently expanded my vocabulary.

Super nice to hear from you and the Dan Man. Of course I'll remember you should our paths cross, perhaps at some taxi show (the Good Lord willing and my knees hold out.) My best wishes to you and that bird man of yours from here to eternity.
    Yours in Friendship,
    Joe

I absolutely love every DVD that I own by Danny Owens. His way of teaching un orthodox techniques and his Southern gentleman way of speaking really makes them enjoyable to watch. They have been very helpful.
