Something that has confused me as I have been competing just for a few years is that some states don’t have a specific award for state champions, my question is somebody competing in the masters division and qualifying for a judges choice best game head, for example, is that considered the state champ in that category or it needs a specific nomination, is best of show a state champ? Some states have one state champ for each category, and some do not from what I have seen but again I could be wrong. Anybody that could answer this question would be greatly appreciated.

No sure bout all states but if you have the highest score in let’s say big game , there could be 6 first place pcs in big game but you having the highest score would win best of category. You would be state champion big game . That goes like that for each category, then the highest scoring pcs out of all of those would be best of show , Breakthrough Award . Now if 2 pcs tie in score like a waterfowl pcs and your big game , then the judges would get together and decide , usually by what is more eye appealing kinda thing . Habit can help you in that position.

let me add some states will let the McKenzie awards be pick by all taxidermist entered in show , by ballot . So it doesn’t matter what level they are entered in or what it will score as it’s by the eye of the taxidermist at the show .

    Thanks!
So in essence a best of category in masters division would be the state champ for the specific category.
By the way saw your piece and the VA show and loved it. I’m the guy who did the bear on the tailgate.

Awesome! Funny cause I voted on yours for gamehead, sika is my favorite cervid, don’t see those very often! I saw your pics in the MD show somewhere I figured it was you.
Got a 92 on the bear and a 90 on habitat. Although I’m happy that was the lowest I’ve got out of all the shows. Got best of category and best of show in NC and best of category in FL with it.

I’m not mad but sometimes ya just don’t get it kinda thing . Or should I say understand it . Congrats on your awards it was a great pcs . Post a couple pics for others to see , lot of imagination on your mount , that’s for sure . Take care .

The points confuse me as well, don’t know how that works. I hear it’s subjective and highly opinionated as well, basically if the judge doesn’t like it to begin with, the technical stuff just adds or subtracts points, which sucks. Thank you bud hope to see you again soon! You should definitely come see us in NC in July. Good luck!

Yea it it based on opinion of said judge and it being correctly done . Perfect example my habit scored a 92 at one show and an 80 in Va . Not sure why but I just laughed at the judge, guess it was because I didn’t use the product he was associated with , but 12 point difference is way off . Especially when I was told by the taxidermist there how much they liked it . But it is what it is . I’ve been told by judges ( not all ) that they will walk the room and see what is the most eye appealing then go from there . The final score is not written down till all have been scored and registration closed , if that pcs has no major issues then the numbers will be written down to reflect that . This pcs is retired, matter of fact I’m delivering it today to the client. I am planning on putting a pcs together for WV in June so maybe I’ll head your way in July with it . Please post a few pics of your bear . Mount it was very cool . Take care

I completely understand! I scored a 90 with mines, and I was also surprised since I scored much higher at other shows. That’s great hope to see you there!

Every association is different. State Champions are a relatively new thing in some associations, and some don't have them at all. Some states award a state champion to any category winner in the masters division, and some only award a handful of them.

For example, in my home state of MO we have category winners in the masters division, and those compete against each other for state champion awards. For instance, our GH, OM WT, and CM WT categories all compete against each other for the State Champion GH award.
