I know this sounds simple but I usually have all my hides tanned commercial. But I got a bobcat I tried to use the mckenzie tan with. Everything went good with the tanning and the hide looks nice. The problem is that when I rubbed the oil on the hide I got kinda of crazy with it. And the hair got alot of oil on it.
Will it hurt anything If I were to wash the hide with dawn and rinse it out.

Not if it’s fully tanned correctly, you will be fine . If not it will start slipping

I have used dawn to wash a few hides and have heard of others using it as well.

I more recently tried Pert plus on a coyote hide.
It worked fine and has a much lower pH than Dawn.

If I recall, dawn was like 8.5 and Pert was about 4.

I have heard of, well, I actually did this once, that you put a small amount of degreaser into your tumbling medium and tumble the hide in it. I did it on a deer cape and it worked well. But, you have to have a tumbler.

wash that hide with pert plus and it will clean up fine, I do it with all hides I tan in house and some of commercial hides, depending how clean they come back from tannery.
