I competed with this guy in Louisiana this weekend. Scored 85 in Masters. Very cool bird, and I get to keep him. PXL_20230509_002629544.PORTRAIT~2.jpg

So what did an 85 get you ribbon wise? Just curious that bird is as clean as any I've seen. Great job Brooke congratz really like the simplistic base makes your mount really show.

Red ribbon for 85. My head got me an automatic 5 point deduction. This was my first time casting a head and I didn't carve the throat out, so when he shined the flashlight in the mouth he couldn't see down the throat. My cast wasn't very detailed and my paint job was crap. PXL_20230514_115345268.jpg PXL_20230514_115354358.jpg I had a slight skin taxi issue on the neck. He didn't like the eyes I used, said the pupils were too large. It was all technical stuff that I should have known better. Masters division, especially in Louisiana, is no joke. There were probably 12 Masters entries, and the top 6 were separated by only 1 point. I completely agree with everything the judge wrote, and there was even a couple things that I knew I'd screwed up that he either didn't see, or didn't write down.

The Masters comp is at a level most couldn't or shouldn't try myself included. I competed at the professional level and that was enough for me. I learned a ton though so if you can leave your ego in the truck and take a butt whooping you'll learn more in an afternoon than you'd believe. Congratz on an 85 and I have no doubt you'll win a Blue in Masters sooner than later. Thanks for being so open. I still say your bird was a beautiful mount.

Brooke that's one sweet looking hybrid. Masters is tough but for a reason. 85 is very good. Keep up the good work.

I mounted a Hooded Merganser for a comp piece in the Ohio State Comp and had a reference picture and got docked due to the tail position. The Judge told me they don't and can't hold their trails in that position! I showed him the live bird picture and was told" well that's not the norm" WTH? It's a tough argument to have and was kind of dismissed by the judge.

Yeah, the pupil thing is kinda dumb. It never crossed my mind to use any other eye. Those eyes are what I use in all my mounts.
