What are you guys and gals using for Rock Mix formulas? Do you buy it form the supply company or make your own mix? I have been using "Fix All" type plaster with some sand and paper pulp with good results, But I know there are better mixes out there.

Becky P One must believe the glass is half full.

    Basic recipe
    1 part med. vermiculite
    3 parts yellow dextrine
    3 parts plaster
    1 part papier mache
    Mix and store.

    For rocks
    Mix 3 parts basic mix
    1 part vermiculite
    1 part plaster
powder tempera paint for base color
Add water and mix to peanut butter consistancy.

  3. Randy here you go

3 parts paper pulp ( Insulation blow in foam from home depot)
    2 parts WHITE dextrine glue
3 parts casting plaster ( the fastest setting you can find. here 30 minutes best I can get)
1/4 part sand the dirtier the better. little sticks bark etc. not dirt
our sand here is full of mica looks real cool.

Break up the paper insulation as fine as you can. Start with small mix of this like a cup for a part. If it dries to fast less plaster---if its to sticky less glue play with it tell it works for you. Different brands of product set a lot slower etc. When you get what you like mix a garbage can full for about 50.00 bucks.
Pour foam for the shape of your rock---carve and apply mix the thickness of peanut butter. Rough rock just stick it to the foam--smooth rock apply and wet you hands in water and smooth up. let dry two days and paint how you want.

  4. 1/3 paper pulp
    1/3 number 1 moulding plaster
    1/3 yellow dextrine.

mix it dry, store in a coold dry place.

add water to the mix at the amounts you need to work it.

Use a natural sponge to texture it. also a small trowel helps.

I use it over 1/4 inch hardware cloth, stapled to a base.

rbt What do you think he will score?

Randy I like to use rock mix from Resaerh Mannikins. leaves a really nice finished rock after you paint it.
