cecil i have a question for ya............why in the world did big blue gill develop a pink color to them??

  3. Bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus)

I know I am not Cecil but Ill have a go.
It is part of the transition for spawning.
The males develop darker scale spots and the purple/Rose color on the sides.
This color tends to go away as fall sets in.

Another interesting point on the color. Female bluegill scale spots tend to be Blue to turquoise color and the males a more of an Umber to black.

Yes Jknuth basically covered it. Not sure about your areas but around here the males get a really nice violet hue on their flanks around spawning time.

    Speckled Trout,

Don't be mad but that is not a pure bluegill. The light color on the outer edge of the ear flap and the light bordering on the fins looks like there is some green sunfish in there. Maybe a natural hybrid? Natural hybridization is not uncommon. Most of the lepomids will interbreed.

Still that is an awesome fish!

Good catch Cecil. You are right. I've caught those over the years in MI at times when I'm using my flyrod on the lakes in May/June. Boy, some nice ref picks folks. Thanks alot. I just did a gil' but want to try another. These pics will do nicely.

I somewhat suspected this because of it's size. It was 12 1/4" long. Oh well.

Maybe we need a hybrid bluegill catagory.
