The 2013 WFCC Fish Carving Seminar Schedule

One of the major highlights of the World Fish Carving Championships is the seminar program. The world-class instructors for this year's lineup represent some of the best seminar instructors ever assembled for one event.

The 2013 Fish Carving Seminar Program will feature world-class instructors for seminars Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The instuctors presenting seminars during the 2013 World Fish Carving Championships include:

All Day Day of Hands-on Fish Painting with 3 World Champions:
PAUL BORKOWSKI, CLARK SCHREIBEIS, and JOSH GUGE

Note: This is a special early seminar that has been approved by the WFCC. To register for this seminar you must contact send a $50 deposit at least 30 days prior to the show to Josh Guge at: The Guge Institute of Wildlife Art, 130 Galligan Road, Gilberts, IL 60136. The workshop fee is $125 with a deposit of $50 due when registering and the remainder due at the beginning of class. The seminar will be held Wednesday, May 8, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. with a break for lunch.

A special early seminar has been approved by the WTFCC and will be held Wednesday, May 8, 2013, in conjunction with the World Fish Carving Championships® at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Springfield, Illinois. Three World Champions will be conducting the seminar: Paul Borkowski, Clark Schreibeis, and Josh Guge.

Paul Borkowski is a World Champion fish taxidermist, Badger Airbrush Company representative, and a master with an airbrush.

Clark Schreibeis and Josh Guge are multiple World Champion fish carvers and both accomplished carving and airbrush painting instructors.

This seminar will teach airbrush fish painting and the nuances of painting trout. It will be held Wednesday, May 8 from 8:00 a.m. &endash; 6:30 p.m. with a one-hour break for lunch. The species for this seminar will be a beautiful brown trout, a personal favorite of both Paul and Clark. They and Josh will be sharing the unique techniques that made these men masters in their field.

The class will begin with instruction on the basic use, cleaning, and maintenance of a double-action airbrush. Each student will receive a brown trout blank to paint (which is his or hers to keep for a small fee). Compressed air will be supplied. Acrylic airbrush paint (Woods & Water) will also be supplied by Badger Airbrush Company.

You are encouraged to bring your own airbrush and/or Badger will be providing free paints and airbrushes to use with special buys on both airbrushes and paint. You will paint your own fish as these professionals mentor your every stroke. The latest innovations in airbrushing will be explained and demonstrated. Please bring reference to help you paint the best fish in the class. After receiving your registration fee you will be sent a list of supplies and suggested tools list by email.

Seminar 1: Coverting Reference to Wood: Essentials in Carving with BRYAN CARPENTER
In the last few years Bryan Carpenter has really made his presence known in the world of competitive fish carving in shows across the country. One "secret" to his success is his great ability to gather reference. This seminar will begin with Bryan sharing a list of materials to take afield for gathering photography reference material. He will explain what to look for and how to interpret reference, touching on reference casting and using a computer to enhance what photos were gathered. This seminar will also include photography tips and suggestions, as well as sources for materials and help.

Seminar 2: Questions and Answer Session with BOB BERRY
Back in the 1980s, Bob Berry literally wrote the book on fish carving and has inspired and taught many people to carve fish. Bob will answer any questions you have in this lively interactive discussion. Do not miss this!

Seminar 4: Options in Fish Carving Attachments: An Inside Look with CLARK SCHREIBEIS
World Champion Clark Schreibeis will begin explain the details of many methods that he has developed on how to make invisible attachments points for your fish carvings.

Seminar 5: Carving a Coral Reef and Habitat Construction with JOSH GUGE
Josh Guge is another new World Champion who took the 2011 show by storm and has definitely turned a lot of heads. Josh teaches on a regular basis and will be instructing on how to construct your habitat, keeping in mind stability, composition, and realism. Here's your chance to learn how to build that tough piece of coral you have always wanted to make. Composition is an important part of your piece and he will show you how to bring that together with the coral construction to create a successful piece.

(Bus transportation will be available beginning at 6:00 pm from the Crowne Plaza to the Hilton for the Award Ceremony. Buses will run every 15 to 20 minutes. The same buses will also be available for transport back to the Crowne after the ceremony.)
